About Halligan

The Halligan Institute for Arts and Sciences (HIAS) is a community where curiosity thrives. Our distinct approach focuses on individual interests, self-directed learning, and building portfolios instead of receiving degrees. Join our mailing list!

So what exactly is it?

The Halligan Institute is a unique blend of workspace, playground, and think tank, where passionate individuals knowledgeable in diverse disciplines live together to learn, explore, create, and bond. We provide some simple office space with healthy food and activities, lots of resources and not much else. The rest is up to you.

We believe that learning should be driven by individual interests and curiosity, not dictated by a set curriculum. Students can organize into study groups or learn on their own and present their work at weekly showcases.

Our goal is to give you the resources so you can build an impressive portfolio that reflects your skills and experience. We don’t offer degrees, and university is your best bet if you need certification. But for many fields, portfolios speak louder than a piece of paper.

Who is it for?

It is difficult to express a specific type of person that would fit in best, but we can give a few indicators:

If you…

…we suggest sending in an application.

You would likely fit in if you’re a rogue engineer who moonlights as a pro poker player, a jazz musician conducting research on bosonic string theory, or some kid from 5th Street obsessed with sprinkler systems.

FAQ

How do I apply?

Applications are coming soon. Sign up for our mailing list to get updates.

Our application process is simple and straightforward. Just a few short answer questions and an optional portfolio submission to get to know you better. We don’t consider transcripts, SAT scores, or letters of recommendation. We’ll follow up with an interview if you meet our criteria.

Where are you located?

We’re still securing our physical space, but plan to be located in or near Boston, MA. Your accommodations will be simple, but guaranteed, the coffee will be strong.

What is the cost of attendance?

We’re anticipating something around $10,000–$15,000 per year, covering board, resources, food, and activities. We also offer financial aid to exceptional candidates in need.

Is there a residency requirement?

Yes, living on-site allows for a more immersive learning experience, collaboration with fellow learners from different disciplines and cultures, and round-the-clock access to resources. Exceptions can be made for special circumstances.

Are you for profit?

We’re still working on 501(c)(3) status; for now, 99.9% of what we earn goes back into and for our community — food, facility, etc. We’re not going to waste your tuition here.
